Kids (and honestly, adults too) don’t get inspired by names and dates. They connect to characters and plot twists. So instead of saying, “Harriet Tubman escaped slavery,” say, “A 5-foot tall woman with a head injury outsmarted slave catchers, carried a pistol, and led dozens of people to freedom—over and over again.” That’s a superhero story. And kids love superheroes.

Watch a documentary together. Visit a museum. Take a walking tour. Make their favorite meal and share the cultural history behind it. One of the easiest ways to make history come alive is to get away from the textbook and experience it in real life—or at least in real conversation.
5. Make it part of everyday life.
Don’t make Black history a special assignment. Make it part of the air they breathe. Instead of “Let’s learn something today,” try “Did you know?” during a car ride. Or slip a fun fact into a bedtime story. The key is repetition without pressure. Let it unfold over time.
